Tuesday, September 21st 8:00 – 5:00 (if needed): General session
No field trip will be held this year
Lunch will be provided from 12:00 – 1:00 Monday and Tuesday. In lieu of posters, students who have preliminary results are encouraged to submit abstracts for “flash talks” this year. These will be a great opportunity for practice speaking at a conference, even with limited results.
Talks will be shorter this year (20 minutes max with questions) and breaks will be prioritized. We want people to socialize and reestablish connections! As a reminder, please submit abstracts by August 15th to Corey Green.
Virginia Tech has mandated vaccines for all students and has strongly encouraged all faculty and staff to be vaccinated. For more information regarding Virginia Tech’s COVID policies and safety measures, please visit the Virginia Tech Ready site: https://ready.vt.edu/. We strongly encourage all attendees of SOMENS this year to take all safety measures to ensure we have a successful event.
In the event that COVID variants make an in-person gathering not possible, the meeting will be moved to an online environment. Registration fees will be reduced to $75.00. For those who have already registered, you will be refunded the difference.
Call for abstracts
Abstracts for presentations and posters can be sent to Corey Green. Please include “SOMENS 2021 abstract” in the subject line. Also, be sure to use the email address for which you would like to be contacted as meeting details are finalized. Please send abstracts no later than August 15th and limit the number of oral presentation submissions to one per person.
While the focus of SOMENS is research and application of quantitative methods for managed southern forests, diverse topics related to quantitative forest management are welcomed from all regions and forest systems. Examples include growth and yield modeling, forest inventory, remote sensing applications in forestry, and taper and volume modeling. Other topics such as forest biometrics education, historical perspectives, and calls for future work are also of interest. If you have an idea for a talk and are unsure if it would fit in the program, please don’t hesitate to contact Corey to discuss.
Up-Goer Five Contest at 2021 SOMENS
Can you explain a complex idea using only the 1,000 most commonly used words? The SOMENS meeting is holding an Up-Goer Five contest with written entries due by Sept. 13 to Corey Green. The rules are simple. Follow this link to a text editor where you will explain your idea using only the most common words:https://splasho.com/upgoer5/. Once you pass muster with the text editor, send your prose to Corey Green. The winner(s) will be read at the SOMENS meeting and participants must be present to win.
